Karl Manning

Karl comes from a cycling family - he loves everything about bikes and riding. His father built him a custom racing bike when he was 6 years old and he was racing by the age of 8. He won five Queensland Championships as a schoolboy. As schooling became more serious, he stopped racing but kept on cycling just the same. He later developed an interest in mountain biking.

The 2006 racing season started in January with the Australian National Road Titles down in Adelaide. This was a great opportunity to race against Australia's leading road riders, including Robbie McEwan, Baden Cooke and a host of other European based professionals.

Defending the Queensland Team Time Trial Championship from the previous year was a very satisfying result - particularly as it is the one genuine team event on the racing calendar. Nothing beats suffering with your mates although trying to hold onto Jack's wheel was problematic at times !

The last race of the road season was Grafton to Inverell and although this was a great, albeit long day out, the highlight for 2006 was definitely my first foray into the world of mountain biking, and in particular the the 110km Flight Centre EPIC mountain bike race. Shepherded by Gary through the "mountain bike bits", the race was full of diverse terrain and challenges and hugely rewarding.

Looking forward to 2007, the goal will be to defend the Queensland Team Time Trial Championship again and definitely race in some more mountain bike races, focusing on the Flight Centre EPIC and the marathon races at Kooralbyn - maybe even a 24 hour event with the other Cycle Scene lads !
