Karl comes from a cycling family - he loves everything about bikes and riding. His father built him a custom racing bike when he was 6 years old and he was racing by the age of 8. He won five Queensland Championships as a schoolboy. As schooling became more serious, he stopped racing but kept on cycling just the same. He later developed an interest in mountain biking.
About 3 years ago he returned to road racing and began the struggle to gain some race fitness.
Tragically in 2005 Karl broke his hip on a training ride after falling in gravel on a hairpin turn descending from O'Reilley's to Canungra.
Fortunately Cycle Scene's Gary Land and fellow sponsored cyclist Peter Garrone jumped to Karl's aid and were instrumental in arranging his successful evacuation to critical medical assistance. Since the accident it has been a long and painful journey back to form for Karl including dealing with the setback of 2 operations separated by 14 months - the most recent operation was in October 2006.
For the majority of the 2006 road season Karl has found himself as 'lantern rouge' in most QCA Elite B road races but he has regained a lot of fitness doing so. His performances in criterium racing have been solid. He completed Grafton to Inverell 2006 placing 38th in C grade.
Everyone will tell you that Karl enjoys the good friendships that cycling can bring more than anything else about the sport.
Cycle Scene wishes Karl all the best in his future cycling endeavours. We would all love to see him back on the velodrome as soon as he has the green light from the doctors.
